Getting Started
The decision to seek counseling for a personal problem isn’t always easy. Psychotherapy has
been shown to have many benefits, including relief from anxiety and depression, better
relationships, and improved well-being. But it’s hard to open up to someone we don’t even
know. It’s important to find someone you can feel comfortable with, as well as someone who
has the experience and expertise to help with your particular problems. For more about
choosing a therapist, try the APA Help Center or Choosing a Psychotherapist.
If you decide you’d like to try counseling we can set up an initial consultation to discuss
if what I offer is right for you. I have appointment times during the day Tuesday through
Friday, and one evening a week. Call or email to see if I have a time that’s convenient
for you. I make my own appointments, so when you call you’ll probably need to leave your
day and evening phone numbers and let me know the best time to reach you.
At your first session we will go over your history, current situation and desired goals,
and begin to formulate a treatment plan. You will also get a chance to ask any questions you
have, and to get a feel for how well we work together. We can meet weekly, biweekly, or
even monthly, as needed. We will evaluate your progress periodically and adjust our plan
as needed. Alternatives or adjuncts to therapy, such as medication or support groups, will
be discussed as appropriate. I do not prescribe medication, but can either work with your
primary care physician or refer you to a qualified health care provider if medication is
warranted.
It’s not possible to predict ahead of time how long it will take for you to reach your
goals. Most of my clients work intensely for a short period of time, and then either
continue less frequently or come in again as needed. Life delivers many challenges, and
a helping hand is always a benefit. My goal is to help you find the internal and external
resources you need to face them with confidence.
Fees and Insurance
I am a participating provider with Medicaid, Medicare, Anthem BC/BS, Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim,
and many other insurance companies. If you’re not sure if your health insurance covers mental
health benefits, or if I’m a provider, call the number on the back of your insurance card.
They will also tell you if you need preauthorization for mental health services. You do not
need to give them detailed information.
If you do not have health insurance, your insurance doesn’t cover my services, or you choose
not to use it, I have a sliding fee scale based on your income and situation. I cannot
publish my fees, but I will be happy to discuss your financial concerns with you before your
initial consultation.
